How far would you travel to buy that special piece of jewellery for the woman in your life?
Crookhaven is a popular enough Biker’s destination, offering a friendly welcome, plenty of space to park bikes and the opportunity to enjoy lunch sitting outside O’Sullivan’s Bar by the waterfront or the Crookhaven Inn. The last Sunday in November was such a warm, sunny, calm day that I wasn’t surprised to see three bikers doing just that. Occasionally one will wander into our Goldsmith Studio but they are certainly not top of our customer profile list. That’s why last Friday was such a memorable day. Jorg had received a phone call checking our winter opening hours. The caller was planning to visit us in a day or so to pick out a piece of jewellery for his wife and casually mentioned he would be travelling from Belfast, 340 miles away! My first thought was “Why doesn’t he just order from our online shop?” We’ll even post it free of charge.
True to his word, on the appointed day, a Suzuki 650 motorbike pulled up outside our studio and this giant of a man walked in dressed in the customary black biker’s gear. The journey had taken him 8 hours including two pit stops. He took his time selecting a few pieces asking me to try them on, helping him to make his final decision. Happy with his choice which was now safely stowed away in his bike box, I couldn’t resist asking him why? Why had he chosen Jorg’s Goldsmith Studio on the Mizen Peninsula to buy that special piece for his wife? Why not Belfast or Dublin or anywhere else? He answered that it’s his love of The Mizen that brought him to us. Also the fact that we don’t supply other outlets nationwide, so its unlikely his wife will see her pendant and matching earrings on someone else.
We marked the occasion with some photographs. After he had left, all I could feel was a great sense of honour and privilege. That encounter will be in my memory for a long time.
